Should we get a chance to get relics if we've already completed the story mode

I have a complaint about the fact that diamond characters were introduced after I completed the story mode, which highly reduced the likelihood of me attaining a diamond class fighter. My friend who completed the story after the patch, had got a diamond fighter from those relics..... I may be salty, but I really want a solution
