Just a few minutes ago I had 995 light shards, I got 100 since I had a streak of 3 in breach battles and when I was supposed to have my light essence it turns out they don't give it to me.

You likely ran into this old bug where the client counts things twice, so probably giving you the illusion that you had more shards than you actually had. Restarting the game usually refreshes those amounts.
