HUNGERN ABILITIES

NEW CHARACTER - UMBRELLA (AND HUNGERN!)

Ib4Jbov.png

The youngest princess of the Canopy Kingdom, Umbrella is rarely seen outside the halls of the royal palace in Canopolis. She has grown up sheltered, with her only true friend being a family heirloom: the Living Weapon Hungern. Together, they fight evil and kick butt in the name of justice, just like Umbrella’s big sister: Parasoul! Or at least they would if Parasoul would let them out of the palace!

The rise of a new Skullgirl may just give Umbrella the adventure she wants. But, when she finds out the truths about herself and her family, will she wish she had stayed home?

GAMEPLAY OVERVIEW

For such a pint-sized princess, Umbrella is packed with unique flavor and gameplay mechanics. She excels at grappler and trap-based gameplay, rewarding players with long, damaging combos if they can plan ahead and make careful use of her bubbles, puddles, and Hungern’s monstrous appetite. Although she has many offensive options, Umbrella is very slow on her feet. Dashing around willy-nilly will be dangerous, so putting careful thought into all of her movement options is key to Umbrella mastery.

CHARACTER ABILITY - HUNGERN'S HUNGER

Umbrella's Character Ability (CA) - HUNGERN'S HUNGER - is indicated by a big circular button on the left side of the screen with Hungern at the center. During a fight, the Hunger Meter surrounding this button will drain at a steady rate while Umbrella is the active fighter.

Based on how full the meter is, there are three Hunger states that Hungern can occupy: SATIATED, RAVENOUS and OVERSTUFFED. In addition to the drain over time, moves involving eating and chewing will fill the meter towards Overstuffed, while those involving spitting and bubbles will decrease it, towards Ravenous.

Regardless of what Special Moves and Blockbusters you equip, you can always manipulate the Hunger Meter.

To fill the meter (and move it towards Overstuffed) you can use her regular throw.
To empty the meter (and move it towards Ravenous) you can tap the Hunger Meter to fire a bubble projectile.

SATIATED is the default state, and offers no particular benefits.

RAVENOUS makes Umbrella's basic attacks faster, as well as giving her a unique, faster dash attack.

OVERSTUFFED makes Umbrella's basic attacks deal more damage, as well as giving her a wall bounce on her knockback attack.

In addition to the effects listed above, some Special Moves, Blockbusters and Signature Abilities will also be impacted by Hungern's current Hunger state. Experiment to figure out which state best suits your playstyle!

For easy reference, here’s a list of how her different moves get affected by Hunger states:
  • Hungern’s Hunger CA Meter Button
    • Default: Fires a single bubble in an arc.
    • Overstuffed: Larger bubble size and causes a knockdown on hit.
  • Dash attack
    • Default: Squeezes Hungern with a large vertical hit.
    • Ravenous: A faster, low slide kick that is difficult to intercept.
  • Knockback attack
    • Default: Knocks the opponent back a good distance.
    • Overstuffed: Grants a wall bounce.
  • Ground tap combo (also known as an L5)
    • Satiated: Final attack has multiple small hits.
    • Ravenous: Final attack has extra, faster hits.
    • Overstuffed: Final attack has a single powerful hit.
  • Salt Grinder
    • Default: Grabs the opponent and staggers them. Tap up to 3 times to grind Hungern's teeth for extra damage.
    • Ravenous: Faster start-up.
  • Wish Maker
    • Default: Blows a small, slow moving bubble that traps the opponent.
    • Overstuffed: Larger bubble size and greater travel range.
  • Projection Lens
    • Default: This Blockbuster does A LOT.
      • Fires a large, slow moving shield projectile with five rotating eyeballs.
      • If an opponent touches the shield they will be hit by all of the eyeballs.
      • If the opponent runs away, the shield will eventually disintegrate.
      • If you attack your own shield, the eyeballs will shoot off and attach to the opponent, exploding later by themselves.
      • Any projectile that hits the shield will be destroyed.
    • Ravenous: Has extra eyeballs for more hits (8 instead of 5)
  • Hungern Rush
    • Default: Short-range hit that leads to Hungern chomping the opponent.
    • Move Modifier: Bonus damage in Ravenous
  • Slurp n’ Slide
    • Default: Slides across the stage quickly, knocking the opponent down.
    • Satiated: Opponent does a small bounce and falls directly in front of Umbrella.
    • Ravenous: Opponent bounces quite high and falls directly in front of Umbrella.
    • Overstuffed: Opponent is launched backwards and wall-splats.
  • Under The Weather
    • Default: Hungern drops two puddles and fires a stream of bubbles into the air that move roughly towards where the opponent is standing.
    • Satiated: Launches 9 small bubbles.
    • Ravenous: 12 small bubbles.
    • Overstuffed: 9 large bubbles that can cause knockdowns. Move Modifier: Chance to inflict Wither.

PUDDLES

Those rain boots aren’t just for show! Umbrella also comes with a second unique mechanic: several of her Bubble based attacks will leave large puddles on the stage. These do nothing if you or the opponent walk on them, but if you can knock an opponent into the puddle they’ll bounce with a big splash. This gives you an opportunity to continue your combos where normally the opponent would simply recover.

You can see some good examples of how puddles work in Tidal Traveler’s trailer.

MARQUEE ABILITY - JAWS OF DEFEAT

aqkRXX4.png

SWEET VICTORY - Gain 2 Stacks of Enrage for 15 seconds when defeating an opponent.
BITTER END - Once per match, gain FINAL STAND and HEAVY REGEN for 15 seconds each when falling below 25% HEALTH.

Umbrella comes with two very distinct Marquee Abilities (MA) - one rewards aggressive and offensive gameplay and the other will help you out in a pinch if you’re on the defensive.

PRESTIGE ABILITY - GUT REACTION

cELL5mD.png

Umbrella charges this ability each time she gains or loses HUNGER.

CHARGE RATE: 1% per 1% HUNGER gained or lost.

ACTIVATION EFFECT: Umbrella gains 5% HEALTH and inflicts SLIME for 15 seconds when HITTING an attacking opponent.

Umbrella’s Prestige Ability (PA) will reward players who can counter-hit reliably. This ability is a great way to keep your HP topped up, and to make the opponent regret getting buffs!

When you successfully counter-hit an opponent, they will flash red and a little broken heart will appear over their head. The easiest way to get a counter-hit is to block, then wait for your opponent to attack. When they finish their Ground Tap Combo (L5) with a Launcher or a Trip Attack, they will be wide open for you to counter attack!

Mastering this Block and Punish gameplay is very important in Skullgirls Mobile, but it’s especially rewarding with a Prestiged Umbrella!
