I use the fighters I like...but that's because I don't have Harlequin, Armed Forces, or Wulfsbane like so many amazing players do

I do both as well. Wulfsbane is pretty good. But I love using dragon brawler, weekend warrior, and underdog because their abilities are fun. The main fighter I use that isn't meta is dreadlocks. She's seen as a sort of weak variant by others but I love her regardless. Back when she was an exclusive in filia relics, I used all my theonite to get her. And I did! Did the same for weekend warrior as well!

I use the fighters with highest fighter score currently because although I have other characters who are top tier according to the lists, I don’t really have time to develop them because I got them later than my current strongest fighters.
