It’s that time again - our preview of what to expect from Skullgirls in 2024!

With the SG2E Season 1 Pass winding down, we are stepping back to figure out the ideal path forward for feature development across all platforms. This means that we’ll be shaking up our usual new content cadence a little bit, but we’re excited to share what we’ll have in store!

Read on for more details!

2023 RECAP

In our 2023 Roadmap post, we talked about a LOT of features that we had planned. While not everything on that list made it into Skullgirls Mobile last year, before we dive into the 2024 Roadmap, we wanted to provide a quick recap of all that we accomplished over the past year:

NEW CHARACTER
  • We launched Marie with all the bells, whistles, bones, dust bunnies, 11 NEW FIGHTERS, Daily Events, and Prize Fights that come along with her!
NEW FEATURES
QUALITY OF LIFE IMPROVEMENTS
  • We added ways for you to See Move Stats more easily and Sell All Moves from the Results screen to keep your Collections tidy!
  • We added a handy XP Boost slot to make it easier to ensure you always have it active when you need it.
  • By popular demand, we rebalanced Rift Battle Catalysts to help refresh the meta. 🧐
  • We added Holodeck Mayhem to help you level up your fighters more quickly (on special occasions).
  • We added failsafes to remind you when you have a Fighter without moves equipped to address a common complaint and help embolden players to use the Loadout system more aggressively.

For a more thorough trip down memory lane, we recommend browsing through our Update Notes to reflect on the year that was.

Before moving on, we all remember last year’s Roadmap – so, in the interest of accountability, how’d we do?

Not too shabby! Now, on to 2024!

DISCLAIMERS

Just like our 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019, and 2018 Preview posts, the features below are going to be discussed in very broad terms. This is intentional. While we have clear goals, the route we take to achieve them often changes once we sink our teeth into the task at hand (and a little air of mystery is nice from time to time).

2024 ROADMAP

We’re going to be following a Roadmap structure similar to what we did last year:

  • COMING SOON means something you can expect to see in our next 1-2 updates.
  • IN DEVELOPMENT means something we’re targeting for 2024.
  • IN CONCEPT means things we are in the process of exploring, which could make an appearance sooner, but likely won’t see the light of day until 2025.

NOTE: Obviously if we listed EVERYTHING we’re talking about/considering, this list would be 100+ items long - this is simply meant to reflect some of the things near the top of the pile.

sv4KykQ.png

Let’s dig into these in a bit more detail!

COMING SOON

Backstage Pass Content

  • OK, this isn’t strictly new, but just wanted to lead things off by renewing our commitment to release brand new Fighters every month!
  • Everything we talk about below will be additive to what we’ve been providing month to month!
GP7gA0m.png

Prize Fight Streak Pity
  • Losing your Prize Fight streak is awful. Like “maybe I should do something else” awful.
  • Soon, every Prize Fight will have one free streak restoration per instance AND the Theonite cost for restoring your streak afterwards will be nominal (no more than 25 Theonite) as opposed to scaling up based on your streak.
  • Hopefully this will make achieving those Prize Fight milestones more engaging and less stressful!
In Game Art Collectibles
  • Skullgirls has always been blessed with incredible art, both created internally and by so many of you in the community.
  • We plan to add support for an in-game gallery that will allow you to unlock and collect both classic and brand new high resolution art that can also unlock stat bonuses for certain Fighters!
  • More details coming soon!
Fighter Tuning Pass
  • UPDATE: Sorry for the confusing language here. A "Fighter Tuning Pass" means we'll be going through the cast and doing several balance adjustments. This will be free in a future update and you will not need to pay for it like the All Access Backstage Pass. We'll use clearer language in future with changes like this!

Check out the 5.3 Update Notes for an example of our last set of Balance Adjustments for an idea of what we'll be doing.
  • YOU get an S-tier and YOU get an S-tier! Every Fighter deserves a glow up every now and again.
  • Who do you think is most deserving this year? Let us know in the comments!

IN DEVELOPMENT

IN DEVELOPMENT
means something we’re targeting for 2024.

Guest Stars (?!!)
  • Implementing a brand new Skullgirls character is a massive undertaking that takes a LONG time. As such, we’re going to be trying something a little different in 2024– Guest Stars!
  • Guest Stars are BRAND NEW CHARACTERS that can be assigned to any Fighter. During combat you can call your Guest Stars to assist with a special attack or action.
  • The hope is that these characters will be able to be made available at a much more rapid pace than full characters which will help us bring more of the roster to life more rapidly than we have prior (and will help us gauge popularity to inform who the next full character(s) should be when the time comes).
  • The final roster of Guest Stars is still under wraps, but - to give you an idea of what we have planned - behold some early concepts of an Assist from the hardest working Dagonian in Little Innsmouth - Minette!

Yqtdt3z.png

Early draft of Minette's idle pose.

pVA4a65.gif

Rough animation of one of Minette's Guest Star attacks.
  • Disclaimer: As always, all in-progress art and animations are subject to change.
  • Stay tuned for more details on other Minette moves and who else will be included in the first batch of Guest Stars in the months to come!
  • NOTE: Guest Stars are currently planned for SGM only, but there’s always a chance they may make their way to SG2E one day!
Main Menu Redesign
  • In light of all of the modes and features we’ve added (in addition the new features we have in store), it’s about time that we updated the Main Menu (and other aspects of our front end UI) to better support it!
  • Expect a layout that’s a little more consistently laid out and easier to understand for newer players.
  • We’re also interested in exploring ways in which you could customize your main menu to feature your favorite characters. More details to come!
Fight Replay System
  • Fight replays are currently used internally as a development/debug tool. Now we want to bring that functionality to everyone! Why? Several reasons come to mind!
    • See how your opponent beat your Prize Fight or Rift Node Defense Team
    • Share an epic, down to the wire performance you’re particularly proud of
    • See how other players cleared a particularly challenging Story Mode node
    • Share “in game videos” of common combos using certain moves to help players better grasp how best to use their favorite characters
    • Find a weird combat bug? Rather than trying your darndest to explain exactly what you saw, just share the Replay and we’ll be able to reproduce (and hopefully fix) the issue much more quickly!
  • Hopefully this can help make it easier to share knowledge and memorable moments with the community and progressing players.
Guild Foundation Features
  • Put down your pitchforks! Extinguish your torches! A key pillar for our full suite of future Guilds features are in the works!
  • Guilds are a pretty massive undertaking for us as a small team (hence why they’ve been COMING SOON for so long), but we’re planning on taking an iterative approach that will build up the feature set prior to a full fledged system launch.
  • For this first MVP version, we’ll be focusing on the process of creating a Guild, establishing a sense of in-game community for your Guild, and giving you and your Guild mates things to accomplish together.
  • We look forward to this as the start of the next phase of the Skullgirls Mobile experience!
In Game Reference Resources
  • Did you know that PRECISION hits are not only guaranteed to CRIT but also will not trigger Signature Abilities? If not, surprise! You’re not alone!
  • While being able to check on modifiers in-game via the Pause Screen is handy, we want players to be able to properly understand a Signature Ability or Modifier even when not in the middle of a match.

IN CONCEPT

IN CONCEPT
means things we are in the process of exploring, which could make an appearance sooner, but likely won’t see the light of day until 2025.

New Origin Stories
  • We’ve wanted to dig back into these FOR SO LONG. Perhaps the time is nigh?
  • In the name of complete transparency, while we really are excited to dig back into Origin Stories, this would be a long shot for 2024.
More Guild Features
  • Foundations are great, but buildings (Guildings?) are better!
  • We look forward to leveraging the Guild feature set we’re planning to tackle this year to add more collaborative and competitive features in the years to come!
More Game Modes
  • Now that we’ve whet your appetite with Parallel Realms, we have many more ideas for new interesting modes and challenges to conquer!
Character Kit Updates
  • Word on the street is that some Characters could use a tune up (looking at you Big Band).
  • Several characters from the original roster would benefit from some additional attention to ensure their SM/BBs, modifiers, and core moveset are maximally viable given the current state of the game.

SKULLGIRLS 2ND ENCORE

With the SG2E Season 1 Pass winding down, the obvious question is - what comes next? While it’s tempting to dive right into a Season 2 Pass - we’ve instead opted to pause for a moment to step back and recalibrate our efforts a bit. What does that mean exactly?

MARIE DLC
Marie’s DLC is scheduled to launch on all platforms including her Story Mode, stage/music track, alternate VO pack, 30 palettes, and more!

ADDITIONAL VO
In addition to what’s already been released (including free bonus voice packs for Umbrella and Black Dahlia), there is still a significant amount of VO that we were planning to include in the Season Pass that has not been added yet, including:
  • ANNIE ALTERNATE VOICE PACK (English)
  • SEASON PASS CHARACTER STORY MODE VO (English)
  • SEASON PASS CHARACTER COMBAT VO (Japanese)

As it turns out, the logistics for all of these has proven to be a bit more involved than we had originally anticipated. As such, in order to ensure that everything is done to the quality level that we (and the community) expects, we unfortunately are NOT planning to release this content in 2024.

Nonetheless, while the timetable isn’t what we originally hoped for, we take our commitments seriously, and we are still planning to release it in 2025. As always, we appreciate your patience, support, and understanding!

FREE SGM PALETTES
As noted earlier, Skullgirls Mobile will continue to get new palettes every month. While the release timing is a little up in the air, we are planning to provide all of those palettes FOR FREE to every Skullgirls 2nd Encore player. In fact, Marie’s full release just around the corner will include new palettes for Robo-Fortune and Beowulf!

NEW FEATURES / CONTENT / CHARACTERS
Although we don’t currently have news on what to expect on this front at this time - just know that we are still intending to support both the console and mobile versions of Skullgirls for years to come. Stay tuned for more details in the coming months!

Yes! I had a feeling assist characters could be a good fit to this game thanks to all the effort it takes to make a full character, and I'm happy to see it become an actual thing.

Everything else I'm pretty happy about seeing, the main menus rework is gonna be interesting, it's pretty standard of mobile games to let you set fighters on the main menu so I'm interested in seeing how that goes.

As for a character that I think deserves some time in the spotlight. I think ultra violent and wulfsbane have been living in mean one and beast king's shadows for too long, and could benefit from some modernization. But if you wanna really dig up someone who doesn't see a lot of use, (besides most of the gold big bands) I think rain shadow, tomb n gloom, and starshine could be good! In my quest to diamond every variant, I'll very often use units most people don't just because they have an element of fun factor to them, and that alone has me in no rush to see them get buffed or reworked, but the three I just named, even I haven't found myself with any desire to use them.
Overall, looking forward to the future!

BIG BAND BUFFS, BIG BAND VARIANTS AND VARIANT BALANCING?? IT'S A GREAT DAY 🙏🙏🙏 please let matches be longer if we have assists i feel it would kinda be chaos trying to do all that in 3 minutes 😭

Guilds! Finally (kind of)! Excited to see what kind of cooperative features this game will employ.

What is fighter tuning and why does it have to be behind a pass? Passes are generally paid/premium in some fashion and talking about S tiers makes me think that a certain degree of P2W could accompany a tuning pass. When can we expect to see details of what tuning is?

Assist characters are a great idea to increase character diversity while lightening the load on the devs a bit. I'm sure some will see this as a similar scenario to Genos being relegated to Mii fighter skin in Smash instead of a full blown new character, but I think it's fine. Hopefully this may also mean the possibility of seeing this assist characters in other capacities. Like, I dunno, guild boss battles against previous skullgirls? A man can dream.

Team SGM, thank you once again for sharing your roadmap with us. We know you’ve been hard at work to improve the game year after year.

There are some very exciting work in progress and new concepts! I am most excited about Guest Stars as that will likely change how we play SGM all together with the assist functionality. I’ve always loved MvC series and 2E for that reason over other fighting game franchises. Can’t wait to see more concepts and early prototypes as they’re ready to be shared.

Guild is finally happening! Unfortunately most people I wanted to form a guild with have left the game over the past few years. Still, glad the team decided on an iterative rollout approach so we can benefit from the foundational function sooner rather than later.

I love the idea of more in-game art collectables as a way to honor and celebrate our creative artist community. Although I’m not one myself, it’s sure is awesome to see your hard work featured in game! My only concern is regarding the bonus stats 🤔 I’d hope you take the approach similar to Marvel Snap’s recent Valentine's buff and make these stat boosts temporarily while those specific pieces of art are being featured. Otherwise you’ll create this FOMO path or wind up closer to some P2W territory.

As for which characters to refresh and rebalance next, there’s been some great suggestions on the forum as a good indication. I hope there will be a survey, or maybe a vote based on server data on which variants are used least.

More game modes are cool but please, a gentle reminder to adjust existing game modes at the same time so that we are not required to play more than we already are because time is finite! Don’t burn us out (I know Sairus will say you don’t have to play and do everything, but FOMO!). Parallel Realm has already been a chore after the first month but the rewards are too good to miss out. Games should be fun but not chores!

One wishlist item from me is to consider adding some sort of long-term goals as the update cadence slows down this year. A once-a-month diamond relic with 80% chance of a dupe just plainly sucks. It would be nice to have a pity system so that after opening 5 or even 10 dupe diamonds you can work towards getting something you don’t have. The idea that you can work towards something guaranteed is far better than praying to RNGsus and getting close to rage quitting monthly.

Lastly, I had hoped for more character retool (big band!) this year rather than next year.

Overall, really excited to see what’s to come. Thanks for this awesome game year after year, HVS.

When will characters from the first season pass arrive in the regular relic???

Btw the game became pay to win, I haven't gotten any exclusive diamonds since the pass was released (I finish all PF), you should change that too...

...or maybe I should contact some russians!

I know obtaining characters is completely random.. but i hope at least to be able to obtain the current new variants.. in monthly prize fight .. instead of making the ultimate goal at 150m a random character.. make it the new characters you have just added!

Yes i understand the variants that was released before i started playing can only be obtained randomly.. but why the variants that gets released while i'm around still cannot get them.. like parasoul's variant "indomitable"

Some people got 2 or 3 of her.. while i struggled to make 150m .. completed backstage pass and bought 5-6 lovesick relic.. and still didn't get indomitable or seraph soldier

I thought of quitting the game because of that.. why i'm here while the new variants is released and still cannot get them.. this makes me think that will keep happening.. so i just reduced the time i give for the game and are currently focusing on another games just because why I didn't get any indomitable or seraph soldier while some people got both and duplicates of them as well.

i swear that making me the artist for the next peacock backstage pass will be the best desicion u guys ever make. my art isn’t the best BUT ILL DO ANYTHING TO DRAW PEACOCK AND HAVE IT BE USED IN THE GAME!!!!!

Really looking forward to these upcoming changes! It's really nice to hear any kind of update from skullgirls as a long time player. One thing I'm confused about what is soon to come is the "fighter tuning pass". What does that mean exactly? Is it going to be some kind of voting system or are we going to be able to obtain variants that have been updated? I think it's great that fighters will be getting changes but I'm not sure how it'll look based on what was said!
Also, here are the fighters I think should get an update:

  • Tidal Traveller (Water Umbrella): Incredibly difficult to make use of her signature ability because of how easily her puddles can disappear. Even as a veteran, I often struggle myself (and have also never seen her used in any rift battles or prize fights).
  • Heart of Darkness (Dark Double): While her hex is incredibly potent, she gets overshadowed by other variants like "Heartless" (Dark Marie) or "Death Wish" (Umbrella) simply because of their easier application, and because she doesn't have much else going on for her.
  • Wrestler X (Light Beowulf): I just never see anyone use him offensively or defensively. Doesn't provide anything late game but really weak bleed damage.
  • Star Spangled (Water Cerebella): There are way more gold cerebella variants that can bring things to the table than her diamond variants in general. Star Spangled doesn't have anything that makes her stand out but having a chance at “stun locking”.
  • Heavy Handed (Fire Cerebella): I like her unique way of triggering her ability, but it doesn’t feel satisfying. She also doesn't bring much to the table aside from damage, which makes this worse since she is a diamond).
  • Raw Nerv (Dark Painwheel): Don't really see her in any defense teams and SA is pretty underwhelming (yes, she could be comboed with "marked for deletion" but that doesn't do much for her).
  • Firefly (Fire Painwheel): Also don't see her much- SA feels a bit weak.
  • Mystmatch (Water Double): SA is just really hard to make use out of and other silver doubles outclass her.

That’s all! I hope this wasn’t too much. I wish the best for you all.

Guest Characters? Finally FENG and Panzerfaust are coming!!

Did y'all read my chat log? I've been ranting about replay fights and Big Band rework for a week now!

No love for P Weave, Xeno, Nyanotech, Big Top or Star Shine?

I might be biased for PWeave since she was my first shiny gold....

Honestly, those are pretty strong contenders for “needing some upgrades” too. I just didn’t want to add too much to my list because there are definitely ALOT of fighters that could use some love.

But nah, you’re not biased- Pweave’s entire shtick of stunning and bleeding is kinda weak in this meta b/c of how accessible bleeds are for basically every Filia, and because of how little of an impact the stun makes.

Well since you asked for which fighter should get updated

● Starshine (Light Annie) needs her precision to be avaliable within 10 seconds instead of 30 seconds which is ridiculous considering that windswept can get precision within 5 seconds

● Star Spangled (Water Cerebella) and Heavy Handed (Fire Cerebella) Have desperately needed reworks since their inception so please look into them

● Ultra Violent (Dark peacock) has been completely irrelevant ever since the piercing stat has been a thing and would greatly benefit from getting deadeye as apart of her ability

● Raw Nerv (Dark Painwheel) like many have said that her ability is kinda meh and needs another rework

That's all I've got

Of the 17 definitions of pass (thanks, English language), I think they were going for the "undergo examination" sense. Like if a bunch of fighters are coming down a conveyor belt for inspection, they are getting a tuning (improved aspects) pass. Very confusing when a different kind of pass, the Battle Pass is mentioned close by.

A lot of fighters need a rework. Hopefully they get mega improvements like Windswept Filia who had been sitting on the dusty shelf for ages.

I hope so, because tying fighter improvements/adjustments to a premium pass would be a huge letdown. But if it's more like "let's take a pass at improving Big Band", then sure, I'm all for it.

In sorting fighters before fights.. why not adding characters sorting according to numbers.. like giving characters numbers of my need.. so i can arrange them like i want

Also the filter is annoying.. why not having a simple filter and complex filter

The way it is now is complex.. l sometimes forget what i wanted to do after opening it.. it was so hard at first as i didn't know which symbol is related to each fighter

pressing the filter icon is slow it should be faster.. maybe you should make a simple filter icon.. instead of opening the filter tap in a new window.. why not letting it to spread in the same window, and after swiping to left and right makes you scroll.. this is easier than seeing all character symbols at once and getting lost

or just make the filter background transparent or any necessary procedures, just make it faster.

So EXCITING! Minette as a (maybe) character is pretty great, but I've always wanted Yu-Wan... his design is just so cool! Perhaps a transform character or something to make the masses of Minette fans happy. Either way, super excited to see what's underway!! Love it!

We really getting prize fight streak pity before gacha pity 💀. I was one of them who suggested it as an addition to the pass but giving 1 free restore to everyone is great.

Hoping for proper gacha pity next.

Collecting artworks for stat boost on fighters makes me worried it will lead to p2w situation. Or it may be timed and not available later. Maybe have a mode where you use a specific character only to unlock their artworks and thus they get their boosts or something. It can be available like realms with option between 3 characters to grind for.

Realms is my favorite mode these days, looking forward to new modes.
