Oh my god I don't think I could root for a character more than her now. What about Cerebella?
Kay so, let's begin with Cerebella since I'm pumped!
So, as we already know from Mobile and a spoiler if you didn't, Cerebella is an orphan, and one from the war in No-Man's Land. Now, that said, the reality is she's a character that is easily led by her emotions throughout her story and in her aspirations. She wants to be strong, she idolizes Beowulf because he's her favorite wrestler and even takes moves from him like a true fan! But reality wise? She wants what was taken from her, much like Ben and Parasoul, she wants something out of life because she was dealt with a bad hand. She wants to find love, and she places this sort of love on Vitale, eagerly doing what he wants all for him to love her back (whether as a father or not, that's really up for debate tbh, but he's the closest to being a father so I like to say it's vague JUST for Vitale to be himself and have Cerebella coming back for more.)
Now, that said, Vitale plays his cards right and Cerebella is doing the dirty work, trained by Black Dahlia, the works, who's not even to say she used to be a bunny girl with Vice Versa? In the show, I'd like to bring that up more than just gags too. Cerebella is a trained woman who ins't just for entertainment, though her personality shows it. She's extremely sensitive to abandonment and constantly has to remind herself that "This is for Vitale, only the best for Vitale." For herself to be "good" for Vitale, she has to be perfect, she has to be literally his right hand woman so maybe, just maybe, it'll make up for all the love she never got from anyone else. Considering the fact that she grew up without parents, she's not exactly in any place to "complain" about who
does love her, its
if they love her, and Cerebella is constantly taunted about that, or at least, it's brought up many times. "Is Vitale's love true?"
Whether she sees him as a father figure or not, she can't take the idea that the one person she banks on, when the chips are down, he'll be there with a guiding hand and maybe a pet name or that he'll make things better for her. She doesn't want to hear that maybe in fact, it's all a lie and she's been a pawn this entire time like the other Medici Goons. She doesn't want to be alone again.
So in this case, the show plays on that. She's the Medici muscle, but she constantly doubts herself during her acts, she keeps talking to herself, maybe things are worth it, but she doesn't know truly like everyone else. Parasoul in game is super critical on that: "Your boss won't be as merciful."
Cerebella fears being imperfect for Vitale because if she can't measure up, she has no one else to impress, no one else to try and win their heart over. No one to say, "Cerebella, good job! I'm so proud of you!"
Not even Beowulf can do that, even if she's his biggest fan.
So, she starts to learn what true love is, by going about her daily things, like rustling up certain shop keeps because they haven't paid the Medici bribe money so they get protected, and maybe she notices how as she's tussling up one of those same balding, rich fellas who really could use a good smack, she notices a little girl who cries out for her dead, and immediately, she sees herself. She sees that same sad little girl orphaned on the streets before Vitale rolls in his limo, glides the window down, realizes her "potential" and lets her in.
She realizes she can't hurt anyone who has a family. She can't and doesn't want to take away someone who she never had. Over time, there's more glaring things about Vitale Cerebella doesn't want to own up to, but is forced to see. The same man can't afford the Goon Money and at Medici tower, is beat down in front of her and is expected to "finish" the job. She doesn't of course, but nearly knocks him out and lugs him back home because she can't help but think about what the little girl might be thinking of. She doesn't
want to. She can only recall herself wanting someone to show her the ropes and make it big.
And later in, she realizes something, when she's out in the casino as the main attraction and lifting elephants with ease, those same people who call her name and shout her praises all the while, they are the ones who
love her. The people who throw the roses and ask for her autographs, the people who made Beowulf the biggest star in New Meridian since that time he cameo'ed on Annie, they're her people now too. And she can't but smile, when she notices the people amongst the crowd who make it to the show, and when she sees the children who look at her like she's a super hero?
Her eyes shine like stars and she tosses the elephants into the air, the crowd gasps, she falls downwards posed and eyes closed, performs a head stand while Vice Versa is thrown on top of her feet and catches the animals as the crowd goes wild.
It was the most successful act of the show, and the reviews raved how this could ultimately be the best show she's ever done, but she doesn't care about that. No.
It's when she's signing autographs, a little girl who looks very familiar comes to her, offers her a crude little drawing of a orange and green figure lifting grey blobs and "CeRbELA" scrawled on crayons and asks for her to sign it... Cerebella finally understands what she was missing all this time and instead for the first time in her life, comes down and asks for the little fan for
her autograph.
But all this is spanned here and there, while Cerebella is designated the regular things, like find some egret thugs and bash them up a bit, she makes sure to travel the beaten path she first remembers scared her, and when the children of all ages and sizes, colors and kinds come from their hiding spots, she lets them try Vice Versa and tells them stories about how she became Cerebella, Star of New Meridian, before bading good luck, passing on what she earned from her shows, and making them pinky swear on Vice that they'll do the right thing and make themselves the newest Stars of New Meridian, and she'll come back and show them how to flex their muscles like Vice Versa with an old fashioned "Diamond Dynamo!"
Cerebella realizes, then, she's not alone anymore. She has a new family, now, and they will never leave her like she used to fear, because now she's here to stay. For
them.
